Is Similarweb Data Accurate? A Controlled Experiment with Public Website Traffic
Using three months of data from six public competing websites to conduct experiments on coverage, directional consistency, channel rationality, and small-site uncertainty, explaining which conclusions are usable and which require returning to GA4/GSC.
Open article contents
"Is Similarweb data accurate" is often asked as an absolute question, but competing websites' real GA4 and server logs are not public; without a ground truth, accuracy cannot be calculated. What can be verified is whether coverage, trends, and channel structure are sufficient to support directional judgment, and at what scale confidence should be reduced.
This experiment uses six publicly available competing website samples from May to July 2026. It is not a representative study of all industries, nor does it treat estimates as real visits; the purpose is to establish a reproducible reading method.
Experimental Questions and Criteria
We test four things:
- Coverage: how many websites can form stable three-month estimates;
- Scale Differentiation: whether the tool can distinguish between hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands of monthly visits;
- Engagement and Channel Plausibility: whether pages per visit, duration, bounce rate, and channel mix are internally consistent;
- Small Site Uncertainty: whether null values and volatile structures increase as samples get smaller.
We cannot test "absolute error percentage" because the tested websites did not provide first-party data for the same period. Any conclusion giving precise accuracy rates requires public benchmarks and consistent definitions.
Samples and Raw Results
All websites used the same three-month window and Similarweb's then-available unified traffic definition. Dashes indicate no stable estimate or insufficient channel data.
| Domain | 3-Month Visits | Monthly Avg Visits | Monthly Unique Visitors | Duration | Pages/Visit | Bounce Rate | Organic Search | Direct |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| hiwaike.com | 27,618 | 9,206 | 5,419 | 1:57 | 2.69 | 47.41% | 3.38% | 80.82% |
| entertool.com | 22,995 | 7,665 | 3,963 | 3:11 | 4.65 | 32.55% | 62.19% | 28.68% |
| seotoolagency.com | 1,084 | 361 | 171 | 0:34 | 1.48 | 34.97% | — | — |
| seoshope.com | 129,708 | 43,236 | 9,920 | 3:54 | 5.36 | 30.82% | 20.73% | 65.56% |
| accountboy.com | 486,865 | 162,288 | 92,330 | 1:40 | 4.14 | 41.18% | 47.84% | 30.01% |
| license.deal | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — |
Result 1: Five have estimates, one does not
Of six samples, five websites had visit and engagement estimates,license.deal had no stable results, coverage is 5/6. The smallest estimable site seotoolagency.com averaged only about 361 monthly visits, but channel data was insufficient.
This shows "can display total volume" and "can stably break down channels" are two separate thresholds. Users should not interpret missing channels as zero organic search, nor interpret no estimate as zero website traffic. It only means the current model did not produce sufficiently stable public results.
Result 2: Scale ranking is possible, but without ground truth, error cannot be verified
By monthly average visits, sample ranking is:
- accountboy.com: 162,288;
- seoshope.com: 43,236;
- hiwaike.com: 9,206;
- entertool.com: 7,665;
- seotoolagency.com: 361;
- license.deal: no stable estimate.
These order-of-magnitude differences can be used to set research priorities, e.g., first dissecting channels and content of top sites. But without each site's concurrent GA4, one cannot say accountboy's real traffic is definitely 162,288, nor use it to project revenue.
The correct statement is: "Under unified Similarweb definitions, accountboy's estimated scale is significantly higher than other samples."
Result 3: Engagement metrics require combined reading
seoshope.com had 5.36 pages/visit, 3:54 duration, and 30.82% bounce rate forming a higher engagement combination;seotoolagency.com had only 1.48 pages/visit and 0:34 duration with a small sample. This direction is internally consistent, but cannot be used to judge page experience quality.
Website patterns affect metrics: tool pages may complete tasks in one visit, e-commerce or content catalogs browse multiple pages, and login pages may generate short sessions. Engagement metrics only become meaningful when compared to similar-pattern, similar-scale websites.
Also check whether the three metrics move in the same direction. If pages/visit is high but duration is extremely short, it may indicate page redirects, automated behavior, or estimation noise; if total visits surge while engagement deteriorates, it may come from low-quality campaign traffic.
Result 4: Channel differences provide research directions
The sample shows three distinct structures:
hiwaike.comDirect traffic 80.82%, organic search only 3.38%;entertool.comOrganic search 62.19%, direct traffic 28.68%;accountboy.comOrganic search 47.84%, direct traffic 30.01%.
These proportions are suitable for generating follow-up hypotheses. For entertool and accountboy, proceed to Semrush/actual SERP analysis for non-brand keywords and top pages; for hiwaike, you need to examine brand terms, private domain, App/bookmarks, and attribution gaps simultaneously—don't simply conclude "strong brand."
Direct traffic is an attribution bucket that may include URL typing, bookmarks, Apps, links without parameters, and unidentifiable sources. Channel names are not causal explanations.
Why smaller sites are more unstable
Similarweb's official methodology states its data comes from direct measurement, contributory networks, partnerships, and public signals, then modeled. When observable signals are fewer, samples become sparser after segmenting by country, device, channel, or keyword.
Therefore, small site research adopts a downgrade strategy:
| Situation | Approach |
|---|---|
| Has totals, no channels | Use only for rough magnitude, don't fill missing proportions |
| No stable estimate | Switch to keyword visibility, indexed pages, ads, social media, and public business information |
| Large single-month fluctuation | Extend window, check campaigns, news, and technical changes |
| Conflicting tools | Unify definitions, report ranges and confidence levels, don't pick one as ground truth |
| Own small site | Use GA4, GSC, and logs directly |
How to calibrate with your own site
To truly test error, select a site where you have first-party data:
- Fix complete calendar month, country, device, and domain scope;
- From GA4/logs, record clear definitions of sessions or visits;
- From Similarweb, record same-scope estimates and methodology notes;
- Calculate total difference, but don't mix users, sessions, and pageviews;
- Compare 6–12 month trend correlation and channel ranking;
- Stratify by traffic volume, country, and device, don't just look at average error.
Calibration from one site only indicates reference for similar sites with similar definitions. Tool models update—annotate test date and version.
Usable, use with caution, and not directly usable
More suitable
- Comparing relative magnitude of medium-to-large sites;
- Observing multi-month trends and share changes;
- Identifying major countries, channels, and online competitors;
- Generating hypotheses for follow-up keyword, ad, and partnership research.
Requires caution
- Monthly absolute values for small sites;
- Very granular country, device, and channel breakdowns;
- Peaks caused by single-month events;
- Interpreting channel share directly as cause or conversion.
Not direct substitutes
- Own site GA4, Search Console, and server logs;
- Competitor financials, orders, profits, and ad backends;
- Audit-grade numbers in contracts, investments, or budget models;
- Fabricated fill-in values when no stable estimate exists.
Boundaries of this experiment
Sample size is only six, concentrated on shared-tool-related sites; no first-party backend; time window is May–July 2026; results will change with Similarweb models and subsequent months. Therefore, this article's conclusions are usage guidelines, not permanent traffic judgments for any brand.
The reproducible value lies in tables, definitions, and uncertainty disclosures. When retesting, preserve original data without overwriting old months to observe whether tool-provided trends remain stable.
What retest records should also include
In addition to numerical values, save the query date, account product package, country, device, domain scope, page prompts, and null value reasons. Mark separately when tool interfaces or methodologies are updated; do not forcibly merge before-and-after versions into a continuous sequence.
FAQ
Can Similarweb traffic be written directly into a business plan
It can serve as an external estimate with source, date, and uncertainty disclosure, but should not be treated as audited fact. Key budgets should use first-party data, public financials, or multi-source ranges.
Why is my GA4 so different from Similarweb
First check metric definitions, domain scope, country, device, timezone, bot filtering, and consent mode. Even after alignment, third-party models and first-party measurement may still differ; multi-month trend direction matters more than matching single months.
Does no data mean the website is bad
Not necessarily. It only indicates no stable estimate is currently available. This can happen with new sites, small sites, specific regions, or closed access environments; continue research with other evidence.
At what traffic scale does it become reliable
There is no official absolute threshold applicable to all markets. Signals vary by region, industry, and device. Judge by whether stable history is displayed, segment consistency, and calibration results against your own site.
